As one of the most respected and experienced heart centers in the world today, our entire team is committed to providing you, and your family, state-of-the-art and compassionate clinical care.
Our team is led by Dr. David Adams, Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Cardiac Surgeon-in-Chief of the Mount Sinai Health System, and President of the Mitral Foundation.
Dr. Adams and his team perform over 400 mitral valve repair procedures annually, and he is the highest volume valve surgeon in New York State, according to the past several years' NYS Department of Health public outcomes reports. The reports also note that The Mount Sinai Hospital's program overall performs more valve surgery than any other in the state.
Dr. Adams also received the highest safety rating from the NYS Department of Health for cardiac surgery.
Our recent paper in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology shows doctors with more experience provide patients better outcomes.
Our current mitral valve repair rates of > 99% with < 0.5% mortality are national benchmarks. Long-term freedom from regurgitation and re-operations after valve repair are among the highest ever reported by the leading mitral centers in the world.
The Mount Sinai Hospital has received the Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center Award from the American Heart Association® and the Mitral Foundation for its demonstrated record of superior clinical outcomes resulting from evidence-based, guideline-directed degenerative mitral valve repair.
Our team has written and contributed to the textbooks and academic journals which define the field of mitral valve repair and heart valve surgery. Dr. Adams is the coauthor of the widest selling valve textbook in the world, Carpentier's Reconstructive Valve Surgery, and the co-editor of the reference textbook Cardiac Surgery in the Adult.
Over 500 surgeons, of all levels of experience, have come to Mount Sinai to learn advanced reconstructive mitral valve repair techniques from Dr. Adams and his team in the Mitral Foundation Center. We regularly lead mitral valve repair workshops around the globe and, to date, have educated surgeons from over 60 countries.
We offer a personalized approach to care for all of the over 700 patients we see in consultation a year with mitral valve disease. Our multidisciplinary team evaluates every patient to first determine whether you need surgery, and only then appropriate guideline therapy and timing of intervention.
