A Message from Dr. David H. Adams
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented the medical community with a unique set of challenges. We are now using the latest telehealth technology to meet with current and prospective patients via video visits, whenever possible.
We have also resumed all cardiac surgery, with additional precautions to ensure we maintain our stellar safety record and continue delivering superior patient outcomes. With these goals in mind, every surgical patient will be tested for COVID-19 upon admission to The Mount Sinai Hospital, to ensure the safety of all patients and staff. The hospital has also implemented social distancing rules, a modified visitor policy, universal masking, mandatory hand hygiene for visitors, as well as single-room Cardiac ICU care for your privacy and safety after surgery.

400+ Mitral Surgeries Annually
Dr. Adams and his team perform over 400 mitral valve repair procedures annually, and is the highest volume valve surgeon in NY State, according to the two most recent NYS DOH public outcomes reports. Our recent paper in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology shows doctors with more experience provide patients better outcomes.
Setting National Safety Benchmarks
Our current mitral valve repair rates of > 99% with < 0.5% mortality are national benchmarks. Long-term freedom from regurgitation and reoperations after valve repair are among the highest ever reported by the leading mitral centers in the world. Dr. Adams has received the highest two-star safety rating from the NYS DOH for cardiac surgery for the past several years.
Defining the Field of Mitral Surgery
Our team has written and contributed to the textbooks and academic journals which define the field of mitral valve repair and heart valve surgery. Dr. Adams is the coauthor of the widest selling valve textbook in the world, Carpentier's Reconstructive Valve Surgery, and the coeditor of the reference textbook Cardiac Surgery in the Adult.
Teaching Excellence to Others
Over 500 surgeons, of all levels of experience, have come to Mount Sinai to learn advanced reconstructive mitral valve repair techniques from Dr. Adams and his team in the Mitral Foundation Center. We regularly lead mitral valve repair workshops around the globe and, to date, have educated surgeons from over 50 countries.
Personalized Care
We offer a personalized approach to care for all of the over 700 patients we see in consultation a year with mitral valve disease. Our multidisciplinary team evaluates every patient to first determine whether you need surgery and only then appropriate guideline therapy and timing of intervention.
