Dr. Farzan Filsoufi is a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Filsoufi’s professional interests include acquired heart valve disease, coronary artery disease and cardiac arrhythmias. He has special expertise in mitral valve reconstructive surgery, reoperative surgery, complex coronary artery revascularization and cardiac surgery in high risk patients (advanced congestive heart failure, end-stage kidney or liver diseases).

 

He received his medical education at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris- University Rene Descartes. He completed his training in general and cardiothoracic surgery in Paris under the primary mentorship of Professor Alain Carpentier. He then joined the Faculty of Broussais hospital and worked directly with Alain Carpentier for a two-year period. Subsequently, Dr Filsoufi performed an advanced clinical and research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s hospital and at Harvard Medical school under the leadership of Drs. Lawrence Cohn and David Adams. He was named Instructor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 2001 and joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2002.

 

Dr. Filsoufi’s research has focused on the early and late outcomes of valvular surgery in patients with mitral, tricuspid and aortic valve diseases. He is extensively published in the field of coronary artery bypass grafting, valvular heart disease and the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation. Dr. Filsoufi is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, The European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, The Society of Heart Valve Disease and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.

 

Dr. Filsoufi has been on the editorial review board for prestigious journals in the field of cardiovascular surgery. He has published more than 110 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and as well as many book chapters in major cardiology and cardiovascular surgical textbooks. In 2006, Dr. Filsoufi received a patent for a novel system for minimally invasive mitral valve reconstruction. He is a co-author with Professors Alain Carpentier and Dr. David H. Adams of the upcoming textbook Carpentier’s Reconstructive Valve Surgery.
