Nearly 400 women learned about their heart health during the “Go Red for Women Campaign,” held on February 6 in the Guggenheim Pavilion Lobby. Visitors were screened for hypertension, cholesterol, and diabetes, and received counseling as well as nutritional advice.
The event was directed by Beth Oliver, RN, Senior Nursing Director at Mount Sinai Heart, and Linda Hackett, Central Harlem Liaison in the Department of Community and Government Relations.
“Women are more likely to die of a heart attack than the next five highest causes of death combined,” said Mary Ann McLaughlin, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the Cardiac Health Program, and Co-Director of the Women’s Cardiac Assessment and Risk Evaluation Program. “Our goal was to raise awareness about what the risk factors for heart disease are and what the symptoms of a heart attack are. Women who were found to be at risk are already calling to set up appointments—that means the event was a success.”
