In October 2006, 51 year old Ron Fierro sat down with Dr. David Adams to discuss his reasons for coming to Mount Sinai from Florida to have a mitral valve repair.
Ms. Fierro: We wanted a surgeon that does a whole lot of these procedures every year but also the staff in the hospital that can manage anything that could happen afterwards.
Dr. Adams: Yes, I agree. I always impress people that mitral valve repair surgery is a unique aspect of cardiac surgery, and it really does require a whole team not just the surgeon.
Mr. Fierro: And again the cardiologists are very confident, even my cardiologist in Florida, but I do not think they have, they just cannot deal with it in Florida right now or at least in my area they cannot deal with repairing the valve and as I said, we did the research, and I want a solution … I do not want a band-aid effect.
